15,000 New Stock Photos That Will Inspire You to Get Outside

by Caroline Mercurio on April 7, 2016 No comments

The birds are buzzing, flowers are blooming, and everyone is dreaming of spending slow, sunny days in the great outdoors. We crave new ideas and adventures that will get us out of hibernation and into the fresh air: hiking, swimming, or even just walking the dog (or adopting a dog to walk). So, in the spirit of the season, GraphicStock has added 15,000 new fitness, animal, and nature-themed stock photos to inspire your next project. We’ve even included a couple of DIY tutorials to use all these pics!

Fitness Inspiration

Are you a business owner looking to advertise your gym or athletic event event? Or, like many of us, perhaps you are an avid fitspo-pinner looking for your next dose of daily motivation. Either way, this super easy DIY “ad” is ideal for social media, internet marketing, or printing.

Fitspo-Meme-15k

To create this image, we took this photograph and opened it using Adobe Photoshop. Before we could edit the photo, we had to make a copy of the background image and hide the original (click the eye icon in the layers panel). Then, we used the eyedropper tool to select a skin tone from the model and drew a large rectangle over the entire photo. We moved this rectangle behind the main image by dragging it down on the layers panel, and lowered the opacity of the background copy to 70%. Finally, we reduced the saturation on the background copy photograph. These last two steps give the final product a faded quality. For the text, we used Existence Light font and added a drop shadow to make it pop.

Cute and Cuddly

Okay, so if you’re more into marathoning episodes of Game of Thrones than you are into actual marathons, we totally get it. You know what goes really well with binge-watching Netflix? Cat memes. We’ll just leave this here.

Allergy-Cat-Meme

If you want to make your own daily “aww” moment, look no further! For this project, we downloaded this image, and again copied the background layer, then hid the original background by clicking the eye icon in the layers panel. To blur the edges, we applied an Iris Blur (Filter> Blur Gallery> Iris Blur; we set the circle to include the kitten’s face, as only the area outside the circle will blur). Finally, we added our text and placed drop shadows to make the letters pop. For the fonts, we used Homemade Apple Regular and Coming Soon Regular.

The Great Outdoors

Who doesn’t love nature photography? There is something soothing about looking at beautiful photos of nature—even if it’s only on a screen. Our new photos are perfect for use as screen savers just as they are, but did you know you can also make your own cover photos and posts for social media? Check out our full tutorial here.

FB-Example-Cover-15k

For this example, we used this original photo and cropped it to 831 x 315 px. Then, we went to File> Export> Save for Web and typed 831 and 315 px into the spaces on the bottom right of the pop up, where it says Image Size.

Go Vintage Chic with DIY Rustic Chalkboard Graphics

by Caroline Mercurio on March 22, 2016 No comments

There’s no denying that the humble chalkboard is having a moment, but the newest versions are far more vintage chic than classroom cheap. As the rustic trend continues, versatile chalkboards have become the perfect medium for everything from printable décor to stationery. We’ve pulled together three easy yet chic projects using our graphics that will have you dreaming up all sorts of DIY chalkboard designs.

When a named teacher James Pillans hung a large piece of slate on his classroom wall in Scotland in 1821, he never could’ve imagined the sweeping effects that the chalkboard would have on design aesthetics and typography. While whiteboards have overtaken modern classrooms, the original black and green chalkboards offer a rustic simplicity that still appeals to artists and designers.

Here are three easy projects that we created in less than an hour using nothing but rustic chalk graphics from our library. These crafts require minimal Photoshop knowledge (think cut-and-paste level here), yet the vintage effect makes each look like the professional work of an old-timey print shop.

Rustic Wedding Save the Date

save-the-date

For this Save the Date, all we did was download this basic chalk background and add a photograph. We used Savoye LET Plain and Helvetica Neue UltraLight for the fonts, and the line tool to create the “break.” As a finishing touch, we used a rectangle tool to draw two “tape” stickers, and reduced the opacity to create a translucent appearance.

Seasonal Menu Template

menu-blackboard

For this rustic Mediterranean menu, we downloaded this chalk graphic, then typed up our menu items using the American Typewriter font in both “light” and “regular.” That’s it!

Personalized Photo Montage

scrapbook-baby

This adorable photo montage is perfect for printable keepsakes or scrapbooking. We downloaded a chalk background, a letter graphic, and a frame graphic. We layered all three into the image, and used a rectangle tool to create the pink backdrop to really make the monogram pop. As an optional finishing touch, we blurred the edges on the shape to create a softer look.

It’s really that easy!

Chalkboard graphics make perfect event invitations and Save the Dates, stationery, photo backdrops, menus, signage, holiday cards, matting, and so much more. With so many possibilities, this timeless trend isn’t going anywhere.

To help you get started, we’ve also curated a collection of chalk graphics and backgrounds that are sure to get your creative juices flowing.

It’s Not Easy Being Green: Videos and Images that Tell the Story of a Symbolic Color

by Caroline Mercurio on March 14, 2016 No comments

Kermit knew what he was talking about when he said, “It’s not easy being green.” Few colors are packed with as much symbolism as this one hue. Green can hold varying significance depending on the context, from renewal and abundance to envy and inexperience—and those are just a few examples.

When using green in a project, creators should know that each shade of green represents something different. Dark greens invokes wealth and ambition, olive greens bring to mind the natural world, and bright greens exhibit energy and vibrancy. From fields of clover to stacks of money, artists can elicit these associations through the imagery they choose to employ.

We gathered some of our favorite green footage and graphics into a creator’s “toolkit,” so that anyone can experiment with the use of this eye-catching color. See if you can devise a visual story using the clips and images below, making the color green a central theme in your work. Every item shown is available for download at VideoBlocks or GraphicStock.
